Howdy and welcome to 4th grade!
I am Jennifer Petty, a 4th grade math and science teacher. Since graduating from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Curriculum and Instruction, I have taught prekindergarten, 7th grade, 2nd grade and now 4th grade. I am so fortunate to now be teaching my two favorite subjects.
I believe that all students learn best in different ways. So, my classroom allows for investigations, direct teacher teaching, active learning and peer-to-peer learning. Math and science are not only vital to your children's education right now, but to their abilities to function as adults later in life. I enjoy tying together math and science, since they are so often interrelated.
Fourth graders are so curious and they are becoming better problem solvers. I encourage students to find "other" ways to solve math problems and to think "outside of the box" in regards to science exploration. Students discover that math problems can sometimes be solved in more than one way!
I hope that you fully participate in your child's educational journey this year. Talk to her about what is being discussed in class. Find out what the math and science topics are for t
hat week. Ask him to be a teacher, and teach you what he's learning. Children will remember much more when they talk about what they are learning and when they know that the parents value education too.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy planning trips and traveling. I tell my students that I am an adventurer! My family and I like to take active trips, so we usually hike, kayak and explore. Our most recent trip was to Nova Scotia, where we were able to experience the extreme tides at the Bay of Fundy! I also enjoy learning about space exploration.
